sister paintings that have a purple figure with a yellow-orange background and henna designs are named “At The Well.” 💛
The name comes from a story in the Bible where Jesus interacts in a beautiful way with an outcasted and promiscuous woman. 💜
She was possibly a prostitute and had had five husband’s which culturally was a HUGE taboo. Not only this but she was a Samaritan. Jews would add distance to their already long journeys to avoid people from this group in. They were considered unclean half-breeds…Yet, Jesus interacts with her in a loving way.
He makes her feel like she is truly being seen, offers her spiritual “living water” and in the end he even uses her to tell others in her community who He is. She walks away from this encounter with a new sense of dignity and self-worth. She became a bigger part of God’s story by sharing the true message of Jesus with her entire community and they listened and believed.
Jesus treats her with so much respect and kindness that even Jesus’s friends (the disciples) don’t understand what is going on.
I love this story because it reminds us that despite our pasts and imperfections we are loved by the Creator of the universe. And The Creator, Jesus, is ready to offer us the spiritual “living water” that only He can give.
No matter who we are, where we have been, or where we come from, as the woman at the well learned, He is The Way, The Truth and The Life.
Amen!
